Florence and Archie Hopkins had Bayard Rustin in West Chester in 1912. His maternal grandparents raised him ninth of twelve. The Quaker faith of his grandmother inspired him to become an activist.

He fought for peace and equality his whole life, like his grandmother's Quaker beliefs. Young Rustin was influenced by her NAACP membership.

Rustin worked odd jobs, traveled, and attended five colleges after high school. Stanford's Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute says Rustin joined the Young Communist League at City College of New York in the 1930s.

Young organizer of the 1941 March on Washington after leaving the organization in 1941 when its focus shifted from civil rights. Attended Fellowship of Reconciliation and Congress of Racial Equality.

Rustin organized 1963 Washington Hobs and Freedom March. It was the largest US public demonstration organized in two months. MLK Jr. gave his "I have a dream" speech to 250,000. Rustin wanted the march to pressure government and allies.

According to Stanford's Martin Luther King Research and Education Institute, Rustin helped King Jr.'s advocacy and impact on the US. Rustin taught King nonviolence.

King only knew Rustin academically before working with him. King valued Rustin's education, contacts, and skills. He asked Rustin to advise him despite his civil rights record.
