French Onion Grilled Cheese Recipe

Love French onion soup? Grilled cheese may make you love it more! The French Onion Grilled Cheese has caramelized onions, fresh thyme, and lots of melted gruyere cheese between two buttery slices of bread.

INGREDIENTS

– 2 Tbsp olive oil – 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, divided – 2 large vidalia onions (or other sweet onions), sliced thinly – ¼ tsp salt – ¼ tsp pepper – 2 Tbsp brown sugar – 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar – ¼ tsp finely chopped thyme – 4 slices good crusty bread – 3 oz. gruyere cheese, thinly sliced

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1

Add olive oil and 2 Tbsp butter to large skillet over medium heat. Cook onion slices, salt, and pepper in melted butter for 5 minutes, stirring often.

Step 2

Add brown sugar and apple cider vinegar after 5 minutes, reduce heat to low, and stir occasionally as onions brown.

Step 3

Stir occasionally to brown onions. At least 30 minutes for caramelization. Stir thyme into skillet before removing from heat. Once onions are caramelized, spread remaining Tbsp butter on one side of each bread slice.

Step 4

Put some cheese on two unbuttered bread slices. Cover cheese with caramelized onions and remaining cheese slices. Buttered-side bread slices on top.

Step 5

Place sandwiches on a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat (use the same skillet as the onions).

Step 6

━━━━━━━━━━━

Wait 2 minutes before flipping sandwich and cooking 2 more minutes until bread is golden and cheese melts.Remove sandwiches from skillet and cut in half before serving.
