One Piece's Prequel Monsters Is Officially Canon To The Series

Monsters, Netflix's latest anime, may be One Piece canon. Monsters, based on Eiichiro Oda's one-shot manga of the same name, is likely a prequel that follows Ryuma from One Piece with some clever changes.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Netflix Monsters post-credit scene reveals Ryuma is the Wano samurai who left Zoro with Shusui on Thriller Bark. After their defeat, Ryuma's zombie throws Shusui to Zoro in One Piece episode #362, proving they are one.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Monsters' anime introduces Ryuma Shusui instead of the manga's katana, legitimizing the prequel.Although Shimotsuki Ryuma killed a dragon in Wano, their similarities make up for this.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Ryuma's zombie's gray hair and Monsters' missing eye scar relate to aging and later life. Monsters repeatedly calls Ryuma a foreign warrior to show her connection to Wano.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Oda stated in the SBS section of One Piece chapter #457 that Monsters influenced the legendary warrior of Wano. Thus, making the one-shot a canon prequel is expected.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Monsters is part of Netflix's One Piece Collection, so rebranding it as a prequel may have capitalized on One Piece's recent success and Netflix's One Piece monopoly.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Monsters' anime adaptation introduced one of Zoro's most intriguing opponents in One Piece, even though they started as different characters in different canons.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Despite seeing only a glimpse of Ryuma's journey, his charming personality has won over many. Monsters deserves a full series now that he's canon.
